"Caminito I"


Caminito is a small street in La Boca, a neighbourhood, or barrio of the Argentine capital, Buenos Aires. It retains a strong European flavour, with many of its early settlers being from the Italian city of Genoa.
During the 1800s, a small stream flowing into the Riachuelo River ran along the same route where the Caminito is now found.
Later that century, this area of the stream became known as the Puntin, the Genoese diminutive term for bridge (a small bridge allowed people to cross the stream here).
When the stream dried up, tracks for the Ferrocarril Buenos Aires y Puerto de la Ensenada were installed at the site, and disused tracks remains at the end of Caminito, along Garibaldi Street.
In 1954 the rail line was closed and the area where Caminito now is became a landfill and the neighbourhood's worst eyesore.
Over the following three years, Argentine artist Benito Quinquela Martín, an abandoned orphan who was adopted by a Genoese immigrant couple in La Boca, painstakingly prepared the walls facing the abandoned street, applying pastel colors and, by 1960, having a stage put up at the southern end; the wooden-plank stage was replaced with a nearby theatre house in 1972. The artist was a personal friend of Argentine tango composer Juan de Dios Filiberto, who created a well-known 1926 tune by the same name.

Easter Island


 Native Rapa-Nui Claudio A. Batista Diaz visited me in "Lille Fejringhus" and told generously about the Rapa-Nui culture, legends and mythology – from him I had the inspiration to do a series of 8 Rapa-Nui motifs:
Easter Island is the Navel of the World
The mysterious Moais
The Birdman legend
The Rongorongo glyphs
The fire as a tool and as a symbol
The Rapa-Nui petroglyphs - art carved in rocks










"Moai"


The Moais are discovered on Easter Sunday, 1722 by Dutch explorer Jakob Roggeveen.
On Easter Island it was.
This collection of 25 meter-high stone sculptures still puzzles historians and archaeologists as to its origins. It is believed that a society of Polynesian origin settled here in the 4th century and established a unique tradition of monumental sculpture. Between the 10th and 16th centuries, they erected the enormous stone figures, known as the Moai, which have long fascinated the entire world and endowed this island with a mythical atmosphere.

Easter Island is a Polynesian island in the south eastern Pacific Ocean, at the most south eastern point of the Polynesian triangle. The island is a special territory of Chile. Easter Island is famous for its monumental statues, called moai, created by the Rapa-Nui people.
It is a world heritage site with much of the island protected within the Rapa-Nui National Park.
Easter Island is known by the locals as Rapa-Nui and it has just one town, Hanga Roa where virtually every one of the 2,700 inhabitants lives.
The island is roughly triangular in shape with an extinct volcano on each corner.
The history of Easter Island is rich and controversial. Its inhabitants have endured famines, epidemics, civil war, slave raids and colonialism, and the crash of their ecosystem; their population has declined precipitously more than once.
They have left a cultural legacy that has brought them fame disproportionate to their population.
Contemporary to the arrival of the first settlers of Hawaii, 300-400 CE was published as a date for initial settlement of Easter Island.
Although some scholars argue for initial settlement of 700-800 CE, there is an on-going study by archaeologists Terry Hunt and Carl Lipo that states: “Radiocarbon dates for the earliest strati-graphic layers at Anakena, and analysis of previous radiocarbon dates imply that the island was colonized late, about 1200 CE.
Significant ecological impacts and major cultural investments in monumental architecture and statuary thus began soon after initial settlement.”












"3 x Moai"



Moais are monolithic human figures carved from rock on the Polynesian island of Rapa Nui (Easter Island) between 1250 and 1500 CE. Nearly half are still at Rano Raraku, the main moai quarry, but hundreds were transported from there and set on stone platforms called Ahu around the island's perimeter. Almost all moais have overly large heads three-fifths the size of their bodies. The moai are chiefly the 'living faces' of deified ancestors. The statues still gazed inland across their clan lands when Europeans first visited the island, but most would be cast down during later conflicts between clans.
The statues' production and transportation is considered a remarkable intellectual, creative, and physical feat. The tallest moai erected, called Paro, was almost 10 meters (33 ft) high and weighed 75 tones; the heaviest erected was a shorter but squatter moai at Ahu Tongariki, weighing 86 tons; and one unfinished sculpture, if completed, would have been approximately 21 meters (69 ft) tall with a weight of about 270 tons.












"Birdman"


Inspired by the birdman ledgend.

One of the most famous motifs on Easter Island is that of the Birdman, a therianthropic figure, half man and half bird, connected to cult events at the sacred site of Orongo.
A paramount chief - 'ariki mau' - held the original power in the society, as was typical throughout Polynesia. Over time, the chief's omnipotence declined
(possibly as a result of ecological stresses), and the secular power on the island was seized by a warrior class, called 'matatoa', whose emblem was the Birdman.
The result was a decline in the old religion of ancestor worship and an increase in acts of warfare. At this time, statue making appears to have ceased, and the birdman cult came into being.

The birdman cult festivities were held at one of the most dramatic locations on Easter Island, Orongo, on a narrow ridge between a 1,000 foot drop into the ocean on one side and a deep crater on the other.

The most sacred area at Orongo is called Mata Ngarau, where priests chanted and prayed for success in the annual egg hunt.
The purpose of the birdman contest was to obtain the first egg of the season from the offshore islet Motu Nui.
Contestants descended the sheer cliffs of Orongo and swam to Motu Nui where they awaited the coming of the birds.
Having procured an egg, the contestant swam back and presented it to his sponsor, who then was declared birdman for that year, an important status position.













"Rongorongo"


Rongorongo is a system of glyphs discovered in the 19th century on Easter Island that appears to be writing or proto-writing. It has not been deciphered despite numerous attempts. Although some calendrical and what might prove to be genealogical information has been identified, not even these glyphs can actually be read. If rongorongo does prove to be writing, it could be one of only three or four known independent inventions of writing in human history.













"Shark Tails Petroglyph"


Inspired by Rapa-Nui petroglyphs - art carved in rocks - especially by a motif of a deeply carved shark with a smaller shark inside located on a flat lava flow inland at Anakena Beach, where the Easter Island's first settlers, Hotu Matu'a and his family, are believed to have landed on Easter Island at Anakena Beach.

Inspired by one of the most important things to the Rapa-Nui people
 - the fire used in day to day life as well as in Rapa-Nui rituals, legends and mythology.









"Navel of The World"



Inspired by the Rapa-Nui legend about the round world as a belly and Easter Island as the navel  in the middle of the South Pacific Ocean – The Navel of The World.

Some said this motif was good. I think it is bad - very bad. It has to be redrawn.

The jubilation feelings given
by forms and colors
of Asbjorn Lonvig...
French author Alain Joannes from Paris praises Asbjorn Lonvig's art to the skies in his new book "Comment communiquer par des images" ("How to communicate through pictures"). It is presented at Salon du Livre in Paris.005.

 

He wrote the following:
The art of the Danish painter Asbjorn Lonvig communicates at the first glance euphoria in a rough state. A so intense euphoria that the glance can not move away from the piece of his art.
Of course, the saturated colours are decisive in this very great glowing. The coloured dazzling and the feeling of pleasure which prolongs it have multiple causes. 
As adequacy between artistic creation and the constraints of communication, the art of  Asbjorn Lonvig illustrates an assumption of neurocognitives sciences: the neurons in charge of visual perception are first activated by patterns recognition, then by colors recognition, then by recognition of textures and movements recognition. In a piece of art  like "Soul hurting still ", the sensory impacts of the forms and the colors are very strong and equal.  The pleasure comes from what the eye and the brain receive from the red, the yellow, the green and blue at the same time as they recognize the squares, the rectangles, the circles, the triangles, the straight and broken lines and even  the letter “A”.
The glance thus filled by a profusion of feelings founds a generating mental state of pleasure.

After and beyond the primary emotion, in a second phase of contemplation, the spirit endeavours to confer an overall significance on the table.  It calls upon its repertory of already memorized forms.  Then, the pleasure becomes ludic.  Functioning like a rebus, the chart of an unknown territory, a coded language or a mysterious diagram, the piece of art asks to the witness:  " What am I ?"

The many possible answers are mental resonances which give to the artistic communication a richness higher than all the other ways to communicate.
This communication is intersubjective.  It organizes the meeting between the subjectivity of the artist and the subjectivity of the witness. 
The witness of the piece of art is free to refer to tropical sensory prints: association of a dominating solar yellow, sky blue, deep vegetal green.  He can also associate the table with an intimate collection of primitive art. 
He shall perhaps remember the geometrical abstractions of Kandinsky and Mondrian. Surely, the piece of art  will be kept in the long memory space into the brain with all its resonances sensory, emotional, ludic and cultural.

It is may be interesting to know that the joyfull  impact piece of art by Asbjorn Lonvig is closely related to its is canvassed artistic. High level data processing specialist then head of a software company, the painter found serenity in a pictorial creation which starts with digital drafts and finds its completion on a support – frame and fabric - entirely conceived and manufactured by the artist.
